The quality of the Welsummer breed varies GREATLY when it comes to feathering and egg laying beauty. We choose to breed Heritage Welsummer for eggs that are speckled with large pronounced dark speckle patterns because no other chicken lays in quite the same pattern and with as high of frequency as our Wellies. When we move juveniles of this breed out into for forever pasture home they are the first breed out of all that we work with to find their way up and into the safety of their coop at night. While others may require a week of training, the Welsummers take only a few days. Their curious nature, intelligence and trainability make them a valuable part of any home flock. Laying over 250 eggs a year, our line of Welsummers is a mix of two breeders from different states that have been carefully breeding their lines to produce this speckling effect while creating healthy and robust birds. We keep Welsummers in our general egg laying flock because they can easily compete with the laying ability of any rhode island red or pearl leghorn while maintaining a more docile personality.
